What is a Rewire & What is Involved?
A rewire is an upgrade of a property’s electrical system (lighting/power/heating circuits) through the removal and replacement of old wiring with new cabling and required components (sockets, fuseboards, back-boxes, switches, light fittings etc), in line with current industry standards and regulations [18th Edition Part P BS7671].
Rewires are recommended every 25-30 years.
How Long Do Rewires Take?
Rewires approximately take between 4-8 days (dependent on property and rewire specifications) and involve installing and concealing new wiring in the property’s internal voids (wall/floor/ceiling cavities) Rewires are recommended every 25-30 years.
First-Fix Phase (Pre-Plastering):
- Often completed prior to plastering
- Drilling walls and ceilings
- Lifting existing flooring/floorboards
- Electrical chasing (creating channels for
- cabling) in walls/ceilings/floors
- Rewiring power supplies (light fittings,
- heating, alarms, doorbells, telephones,
- aerials, smoke alarms etc)
- Fitting new back-boxes for sockets and
- switches
- Installing new fuseboards (consumer unit)
- Formative Electrical Testing
Second-Fix Phase (Post-Plastering):
- Often completed after (re)plastering
- Installing light fittings
- Fitting switch & socket face-plates
- (Re)connecting power to doorbells, showers, cookers, fans etc
- Summative Electrical Testing
- Electrical Installation certification issued
- Upon completion
